5 ways to celebrate Hispanic Heritage month at your school…

Hire Performers to put on a Hispanic Heritage month show like our School Assembly: Fuego: Dances From Latin America

  1. Music 🎶

Play music from different Latin American countries in your class. Listen to some of the following genres

-Salsa: This style of music is a melting pot of 3 different cultures Cuban, Puerto Rican, and African American. Salsa became its modern form when all three of these cultures played music together in New York City during the 40s and 50s. It was then popularized in the 60s and 70s.

-Bachata: Hailing from the Dominican Republic this style of music is rhytmically diverse and popular with the younger generations of Latinos living in America.

- Reggaeton: This urban latin form of music is super popular thanks to the rise of Bad Bunny and Karol G.

- Cumbia: is a forlkform of music originating from Colombia, but can be heard in many countries across Latin America

2. Food 🥘

Organize a potluck celebration assigning each student a dish from a different country. This is super fun to do as a class assignement, but even more fun if you can do this as a school wide event for a parent student night. Dishes you could make would be…

- Emanadas: This pocket of goodness is found all over Latin America and the Carribean which can be made with meat or veggies depending on the country it hails from

- Mofongo: This Puerto Rican plantain dish is super delicious. At its most basic all you need is plaintains, garlic, salt, and olive oil to make it. Locals usually spice it up with seafood or other meats.

-Mole is a complex sauce found in Mexican cusine usually poured over meat. If you have a parent that is an advanced chef or is of Mexican decent, I’d highly recommend asking if they could make this amazing dish.

- Paella is a spanish rice dish that can be made with seafood, meat, and even veggies.

3. Dance 🕺💃

Play videos of different dances from latin America during a break or as a reward.

-Bomba: Afro-Puerto Rican dance typcially danced with skirts. Video to watch

-Salsa: With 6 different styles of salsa to choose from this dynamic style of dance is sure to be an exciting one. Video to watch

-Reggaeton: This Urban style of dance is becoming increasingly popular with the rise of music stars such as Bad Bunny and Karol G. It is very similar to Hip Hop with influences from both dancehall and latin social dance. Video to watch
